Dr. Casañas is a Board Certified Internist and Board Certified pain treatment specialist who directed and owned three successful medical clinics in northern California for the last twenty years. After completing his training at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, Dr. Casañas moved to California. While in California, Dr. Casañas also trained at UCLA in Medical Acupuncture, which is based on the neuro-anatomical foundations of modernWestern science utilizing Chinese techniques of diagnosis and treatment. While in California, Dr. Casañas was an assistant clinical professor at the University of California San Francisco and became involved as a nationwide speaker and presenter at renown medical conventions.
Prior to his medical training, Dr. Casañas completed a Masters of Science degree at the University of South Florida and established ties in that academic community. Dr. Casañas is currently an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of South Florida School of Medicine.
In addition, Dr. Casañas has recently published two textbooks of medicine, The Treatment of Diabetes with Chinese Medicine, and The Treatment of Cardiovascular Disease with Chinese Medicine.
Dr Casañas’ wife, Beata, is a full-time Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of South Florida School of Medicine, Department of Infectious Diseases. She is a Board Certified Internist and an Infectious Disease expert. She is the Communicable Disease Director and Chief of Staff at the Hillsborough County Department of Health.
Dr. Casañas and his wife are currently engaged in supervising and teaching students abroad at various medical projects and as speakers at various international conferences, particularly India, Kazakhstan, and the Dominican Republic. They are also both engaged as medical instructors for other physicians pursuing continuing education on an international cruise ship, the Holland America.
Dr. Casañas has served as a Preceptor for various medical, professional, and academic institutions including Northeastern Ohio University, University of California Davis, and the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific, and has been in the medical student mentor program for the U.S. Public Health Service National Health Service Corp, and a medical expert witness for the Boards of Medicine in the state California and the state of Florida.
In addition, while in California he also served as the main investigative consultant for the state of California, Department of Corporations, Health Section in Sacramento, California. He has served on the Board of Directors as an executive member of the Health Council of West Central Florida, and is presently on the Medical Assisting Advisory Board and Medical Director of the Health Sciences program at Florida Metropolitan University.
Throughout his academic career, he has been awarded Dean’s List, Honors Convocation, and Honor Merits at various under-graduate and post-graduate institutions. He has also been involved as an Assistant Psychology instructor and Assistant Statistician at Lynchburg College in Virginia.
Dr. Casañas was also the National Science Foundation Research recipient for an important marine biology grant through the University of South Florida in St. Petersburg in 1973. Prior to completing his medical training, Dr. Casañas was also engaged as a research microbiologist at the Veterans Administration Hospital in the section of Infectious Diseases and Immunology in Tampa, Florida.
Dr. Casañas’ continuing medical education credits involve a wide breadth of advances and developments in functional medicine, integrative medicine, and aesthetic medicine. Although the state of Florida requires only 20 hours of continuing education per year, Dr. Casañas usually surpasses 200 hours every year.
Dr. Casañas also received specialized instruction in Eastern meditative and stress management techniques and utilizes those successfully in his current practice.
Dr. Casañas is an avid reader and inveterate book collector and is currently working on his first novel, as well as a book of short stories. In high school, Dr. Casañas earned theNational Merits College of Award for writing in 1964.
Since Dr. Casañas is a devout and enthusiastic scholar and he has a passion for learning and staying abreast in the medical, as well as other fields, Dr. Casañas does not plan on ever retiring. He enjoys excellent health and is in an optimal state of function since he practices exactly what he preaches in his office.
Dr. Casañas is affiliated with Tampa General Hospital and performs his inpatient services at that facility. In addition, Dr. Casañasuses the academic staff at the University of South Florida, as well as reputable hospitalists’ services.
Dr. Casañas practices out of two offices, Unicorn Medical office in West Tampa and Lunasol Institute in Westchase.
