BOTOX® is a purified protein that is administered in a simple, non-surgical procedure that temporarily improves the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines.
How does BOTOX® Cosmetic work?
The two muscles between the brows are largely responsible for frown lines. When the muscles contract they draw the brows together. Over time, the skin loses its elasticity and with repeated frowning moderate to severe lines form between the brows. In addition, there are wrinkle lines on the forehead, next to the eyes (crows feet), on the chin, neck muscles, etc.
During a treatment, very low doses of BOTOX® Cosmetic are administered through tiny injections directly into the muscles. BOTOX® Cosmetic is intramuscular, blocking the chemicals that cause the muscles to contract allowing them to relax. When the muscles are relaxed, movement is restricted and frown lines will be smoothed out giving you a youthful appearance.
Dr. Casañas will determine exactly where to administer the injections to achieve the best results. Although no anesthesia is required, we may choose to numb the area with a cold pack or anesthetic cream prior to injection. The entire procedure takes approximately 10 minutes. There is no downtime afterward and discomfort is minimal and brief.
How soon will I see results?
Your own results may vary, but you can expect to see results within days after your treatment. The appearance may continue to improve for up to 2 weeks. We recommend a 2-week follow-up inspection visit. Visible results have been shown to last up to 4-6 months. It is always best to not wait too long for your follow-up treatment. By having your follow-up treatment before your frown lines completely return will keep your long-term need for re-treatment to a minimum. There seems to be a cumulative effect.
What are the common side effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic?
The most common side effects following injection include temporary eyelid droop and nausea. There may be localized tenderness, swelling, redness, and/or bleeding or bruising around the injection area. Localized pain, infection and inflammation could also occur.
